In this chapter, I describe multiple options for negotiating the various constraints of time, resources, scope, and costs that affect the project.

It’s about Time

Suppose that the boss asks you to commit to completing a project by a certain date. Your palms get sweaty and the pit of your stomach feels queasy, but then, for cover, you tack on a week to the targeted finish date and promise to deliver the impossible.

You hope that you can do it. You want to do it. But can you do it?

Project helps you feel confident about committing to a time frame, because you can see how long every task takes to complete. Before you make promises to the boss, you had better know the total length of time to complete the project and its critical path — the longest series of tasks that must be completed on time in order to meet the overall project finish date.

The timing data for the project summary task tells you how long the entire project will take to complete. Simply display Gantt Chart view and look at the Duration, Start, and Finish columns. If the finish date isn’t feasible, you have to modify tasks or resources or negotiate a different date.

Before you commit to an unreasonable date, remember Murphy’s Law: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. And Murphy thrives on projects. To lessen Murphy’s influence, you allocate contingency reserve, as described in the next section.
